Associate Professor, Faculty of Electrical Engineering
Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)

I study sensing materials, memristive devices and semiconductor thin films, and teach nanotechnology and semiconductor devices.

My research looks at how thin films and nanostructured materials can be made into sensors and memristive devices, from pH sensors on flexible substrates to soil electrochemical sensing. I am Deputy Director of the Microwave Research Institute and a member of the Integrated Sensors Research Lab at UiTM, and I lead STEM education programmes with industry and community partners. I hold a PhD in Materials Science from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST).

Research

  • Sensors and sensing materials

Metal-oxide and polymer sensing films for pH and electrochemical sensors, including extended-gate field-effect transistors (EGFET) on flexible substrates. Recent work covers sol–gel and electrospray-deposited TiO2 electrodes and soil electrochemical sensing.

  • Memristors and memristive devices

How memristive metal oxides such as titania respond to their environment, and how that behaviour can be used for sensing. This work was funded by national Niche Research and Exploratory Research grants.

  • Semiconductor materials fabrication and characterisation

Thin-film growth by sputtering, e-beam and thermal evaporation and spin coating, characterised by SEM, FESEM, XPS, Raman, AFM and electrical analysis. Projects include ZnO thin films and nanorods on flexible substrates and low-temperature poly-Si on glass.

  • Nanotechnology

Nanostructured materials, from ZnO nanorods to carbon nanostructure hybrid films and superhydrophobic nanostructured electrodes, used to make sensors more sensitive.

  • STEM education

Programmes that bring robotics, electronics, computational thinking and AI to school students and young innovators, with over RM 900,000 in sponsorship since 2015. I am an IEEE STEM Champion and have led programmes with MDEC, CelcomDigi, Maxis and BRIDA NTB in Indonesia.
